PLATÓN REPÚBLICA / PLATO'S REPUBLIC

Este seminario tiene por objeto el estudio de la República de Platón.  Este famoso diálogo produce perplejidad a la hora de establecer las relaciones internas de todos los contenidos que abarca, incluyendo sus dimensiones metafísicas, epistemológicas, y ético-políticas. La pregunta inicial por la definición de la justicia deriva en la cuestión del mejor proyecto político posible, la educación necesaria para que las distintas clases sociales alcancen sus respectivos niveles de virtud y felicidad, incluyendo la controvertida cuestión de la rigidez o flexibilidad de las funciones de cada clase. En el corazón del diálogo se desarrollan los famosos libros centrales con sus novedosas ideas revolucionarias para la época y sus enigmáticas cuestiones ontológicas y epistemológicas. Prosigue la obra con el estudio de los sistemas políticos deseables y rechazables, analizados en su evolución ética. Cierra la obra el mito de Er con sus controvertidas afirmaciones acerca de los destinos de las almas en el más allá.

Se trata de explorar la definición de justicia y la figura de los filósofos reyes (y las filósofas reinas) como cúspide ejemplar de la ciudad. Para ello se apelará al estudio de temas como las partes del alma y su significación ético-política, la relación entre los individuos y el sistema político en el que se forman y viven, la relevancia del conocimiento para la vida política, o la relación entre deseo, conocimiento, y poder.

En el análisis del diálogo se tendrán en cuenta el contexto, la datación relativa, los personajes y especialmente, el mensaje de Platón para los políticos contemporáneos y la crítica que nos merece desde nuestra situación actual.

This Seminar is devoted to the study of Plato's Republic.  This famous dialogue is perplexing when it comes to establishing the internal relationships of all its contents, including its metaphysics, epistemology, and its ethical-political doctrines. The initial question of the definition of justice leads to the question of the best possible political project, the education necessary for the different social classes to reach their respective levels of virtue and happiness, including the controversial question of the rigidity or flexibility of the functions of each class. At the heart of the dialogue, the famous central books propose revolutionary new ideas and raise some enigmatic ontological and epistemological questions. The work continues with the study of desirable and detestable political systems, analysed in their ethical evolution. The book closes with the myth of Er which includes controversial claims about the fate of souls in the afterlife.

The aim of the Seminar is to explore the definition of justice in the ideal city and the status of the philosopher-kings (and queens) as the best effective organs of government. To this end, we will study central themes such as the parts of the soul and their ethical and political significance, the relationship between the individual and the common good, the relevance of knowledge for the life of the polis, or the relationship between desire, and power.

The analysis of the dialogue will take into account the context, the relative dating, the characters and Plato's message for contemporary politicians and the critical aspects it introduces to our perspective.

El objetivo fundamental de la asignatura es alcanzar una comprensión reflexiva y crítica del significado del diálogo. Se analizarán las principales cuestiones que se plantean los personajes en su búsqueda, al tiempo que se intentará comprender los mensajes cifrados, las ironías y los sobreentendidos a fin de lograr que los alumnos sean capaces de distinguir los diferentes hilos argumentativos de la trama y desechar las vías sin salida. La lectura directa y pormenorizada de los textos nos permitirá comprender cómo lo que se dice y lo que sucede en la acción son dos modos correlacionados de expresar un mismo mensaje.

The main objective of the course is to achieve a reflective and critical understanding of the dialogue. We will analyze the diverse issues raised by the characters throughout this very complex text, keeping an eye on the encrypted messages, the irony and innuendo, while following the different argumentative threads and dismissing dead ends. Our direct and thorough reading of the text will allow us to understand the intimate connection between what is said and what happens in the action.
